This flat fire in Hammersmith last year also spread to a garage at the rear of the property and witnesses reported seeing smoke billowing across the road.
Crews would have had to consider the danger to occupants nearby including road users with the danger of smoke affecting the visibility for drivers.
One flat fire can lead to other issues such as these which is why we must try and reduce as many fires as we possibly can. Having a fire risk assessment carried out for the communal areas of flats which also includes tenant fire safety advice can be a big part of this process.

This flat fire in Whitechapel was prevented from spreading due to a newly installed fire door within the flat. That’s the report coming from the Tower Hamlets Housing Association.
It’s an interesting article because we are talking here about different pieces of legislation (Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order 2005) and (Housing Act 2004) and potentially a type 3 or 4 fire risk assessment that could have identified serious fire safety shortcomings in the flats themselves.
It’s worth reading because with the new Fire Safety Bill coming out this October, there will be a massive focus on compartmentation (internal and external) and fire doors will be one of the key issues which are expected to play a bigger part in future fire safety prevention.

This hotel fire in South Kensington started in the basement and caused the mass evacuation of over 500 occupants. Fortunately no injuries were reported.
Dealing with fires in basements is tricky for firefighters and you have to deal with limited ventilation, often a large build up of combustible materials and limited and unusual escape routes.
That’s why a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment must consider all areas of a building and all occupants including ensuring the safety of firefighters should they have to enter the building.

Residents of this high rise block of flats in Cardiff have spoken of a ‘never ending sense of dread’ at the stress of having cladding on their building which has failed fire safety tests.
They have been told their flats are worthless and that this could take years to resolve. They are being asked to fund some of the work themselves and still fear for their safety despite new fire alarm systems being installed and the fire service guaranteeing an early response.
You can understand their frustration which is multiplied across the country for residents of hundreds of blocks of flats who have also failed cladding tests and have left residents in a state of shock.

It must be so frustrating for flat owners who are heavily mortgaged and yet have been told their properties are currently worthless due to external cladding issues.
Some of these residents are desperate to move but being told there is nothing they can currently do until these fire safety issues are resolved which can cost huge sums of money. There are then often disputes about who pays for the work, who is at fault and how these things are resolved moving forward. All very stressful for people.
Please do contact Whale Fire for any fire safety requirements including external wall assessments and EWS1 enquires.

Firefighters from London Fire Brigade (LFB) recently attended a car park fire at a block of flats in Chelsea. The fire started in an electrical intake room in the car park area.
It goes to show that fires can start in all parts of a building and that a fire risk assessment needs to cover all areas of a building and consider any potential rapid fire spread and the safety of all occupants.
