London Fire Brigade (LFB) are advising Housing Providers to be ready for the introduction of the New Fire Safety Bill when it becomes law after the current parliamentary process.
They must be prepared and ready to pay particular attention to fire doors and the external walls of buildings within their fire risk assessments. It’s always best to be prepared and ahead of the game.

Firefighters have been fighting a large outbuilding fire in Wisbech and advised residents to keep all doors and windows closed in the surrounding area.
This is because of the risk of asbestos within the fire and the damage to the environment and local occupants. Its always important to remember that its not just the building on fire and any potential occupants inside that are the only concern.
Evacuating local premises and persons from nearby is a very important role as fires can spread very quickly in strong winds or otherwise dangerous conditions

This restaurant owner in Derby has been spared jail following a fire that put occupants at risk but it’s not where you want to be as a business or premises owner.
Having a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment in place and showing due diligence in carrying out any recommendations made should ensure you are not even put in this position in the first place.

This is an interesting article because it again emphasises the link between planning permission, architectural design, building control and fire safety.
Since Grenfell we have started to see the fallout between these various stages of development and how at times safety is comprised at the expense of profit.
Cheaper building materials and problems during construction are often only identified after the building has been occupied and we are now seeing a backlog of these buildings across the UK.
It’s vital this is put right at the beginning of a building idea and design and all the way through to completion.

This house fire in Richmond, London was started in the ceiling of the bathroom and spread to the loft space.
London Fire Brigade (LFB) were called when a neighbour could smell burning. Although this is a private dwelling not forming part of the Regulatory Reform Fire Safety) Order 2005, it still goes to show the value of having a working smoke alarm (not known from report) and having an appreciation of how fire can spread from one compartment to another.
The cause of the fire was reportedly heat radiating from light onto combustible materials over a period of time....

Interesting article about a 46% increase in fires seem during the lockdown period. All the focus has been on the virus and as always in life there are consequences if you neglect other important issues.
We have also seen a decade or so of cheaper building and construction materials as energy saving has taken a priority so again where focus and money goes to one place, often safety or other issues are neglected and its about striking the right balance.

This flat fire in Fulham at the end of last year was dealt with by London Fire Brigade (LFB).
It involved rescues and evacuation of occupants from surrounding flats. It shows that fires can spread beyond one compartment and the value of a fire risk assessment for the building as a whole.
